  • Module I and module II of this illustration course can be taken individually, but the admission to module II requires the graduation of module I or a relevant portfolio. The illustration course is authorized by the Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of National Education, and the diploma is awarded only to those who have completed the full course. The minimum level of access to the course is for high school graduates with a baccalaureate diploma.

Description

Module I of this illustration course accommodates beginner students, passionate about the subject. It addresses manual work techniques (graphite, colored pencil, watercolor), mixed digital editing techniques (Adobe Photoshop) and typography, preparing students for illustration projects, regardless of their specificity. It focuses on the development of personal style and on the acquisition of skills in terms of graphic, manual and / or digital representation.

Duration: 12 weeks of course + 1 week of vacation

Price:

  • 1900 EUR, payable in 2 installments
  • 1700 EUR, payable in one installment, at the beginning of the course
Week 1 (Workshops): November 4-7

Technique: graphite and colored pencils

Tutor: Irina Neacșu + special guest on Zoom

What you will learn:

  • Fundamental techniques in drawing and sketching, with notions of composition, practice of hatching and rendering light on surfaces of different textures, volume, perspective;
  • Outdoor workshops (if weather conditions allow) on sketching, drawing and study;
  • Acquisition of chromatic notions and correct rendering of colors.

The topics will vary depending on the students’ experience.

Week 2 (Zoom): November 9, 19.00-21.00

Brief history of artistic styles, with the explanation of composition notions, chromatics, aesthetics and symbolic representations.

Week 3 (Workshops): November 18-21

Technique: watercolor

Tutor: Mary Dillon (in English)

What you will learn:

  • Watercolor transparency technique and its handling for naturalistic renderings
Week 4 (Zoom): November 23, 19:00 – 21:00

Different illustration artists and techniques, with focus on their approaches and ways of working, in relation to the social context in which certain styles and trends develop.

Week 5 (Workshops): 2 – 5 December

Technique: digital, Photoshop

Tutor: special guest

What you will learn:

  • How to use Photoshop to transfer handmade works to the digital medium
  • Image processing, print preparation, text insertion, pattern layouts
Week 6 (Zoom): December 7, 19:00 – 21:00

Illustration, graphic design and contemporary applications, with a discussion of how illustration can become an object.

Week 7 (Workshops): December 16-19

Technique: mixed (bookbinding, printing, book covers)

Tutor: special guest

What you will learn:

  • With all the knowledge gained up until this point and having at hand both manual and digital techniques, the tutor will explain the printing process and image transfer techniques to the reality of the object
Week 8 (Zoom): December 21, 19.00-21.00

We will discuss different approaches on illustration and text. You will learn how the text and the illustration work together and which is the ideal way to combine words and visual elements in order to make them complement each other.

Week 9 (Practical Workshops): January 6-9

Techniques: freedom of choice

Tutor: Irina Neacșu + guest Zoom

  • Project launch and individual guidance
  • There will be a common theme assigned to the final project, but it allows for individual approaches depending on the interest of each student. Concept and image outline, research and the elaboration of the working method are the basis of the further development during this month.

Week 12 (Practical Workshops): January 27-30

The last revisions and changes are made in order to complete the project. The final presentation will be held in front of a commission of specialists in the field of art and illustration.

 

Total working time: 132 hours of practice

Total theory time: 12 hours of presentations

Time for individual study: 72 hours for individual reading and completing projects
