Botanical Art Summer School in Transylvania is dedicated to intermediate botanical artists who want to explore Transylvanian flora in graphite and watercolor.
The tutor of the course is Irina Neacșu, botanical artist and designer, RHS Silver-gild medal in 2022, currently PhD student in Visual Arts at UNARTE Bucharest. More information about Irina, here.
Irina Neacsu is trained as an architect. She explores botanical subjects in various techniques, having as favorites graphite, ink and watercolor dry brush. She will guide to in drawing, composition mastering, and technique mixing, as well as sketching, for an authentic, personal approach to botanical art.
This program is an immersive journey in the wonderful Transylvanian culture and nature, mixing the experience of being in a medieval town, with the one of exploring the meadows and rural surroundings. As the course is based in Brasov, where we have quick access to all city facilities and touristic sites, a trip in the countryside will round the experience. Our botanist will guide us through the fields and talk about the seasonal plants, and you are most welcomed to sketch plants and landscapes. Evenings are not included in the program, but we are happy to organize dinners together, city tours or any activities for those who wish.
In the studio, students have access to a wide collection of books, while enjoying a quiet and serene atmosphere, perfect for painting. The course focuses on sharping each one’s technique, with emphasis laid on the authenticity of drawing and expression.

Morning – meeting in the studio, presentations, quick outlines of the course, drawing
We will prepare potted plants that are local, or with special meaning for the area, in order to make sure we all have material that will resist for the whole period of the course.
Afternoon – continue drawing
Evening (optional) – dinner together
Tuesday, July 18:
All day – trip to Viscri, in the Transylvanian countrydise, for a walk together with our botanist, to see wild plants, and to sketch. We will also visit the Pince’s House and the Fortified Church in Visci. Reservation for lunch will be arrange, lunch will be at own’s costs. All other fees are part of the course, including the entrance tickets and the transport.
Wednesday, July 19:
Morning – continue drawing, work on composition
Afternoon – shading, first layers
Evening (optional) – guided tour of Brasov
Thursday, July 20:
All day individual studio work and free time in the evening
Friday, July 21:
All day studio work
Drinks in the studio for the end of the course

Saturday, July 22: departure
The course will be based at Irina Neacsu Studio, a wonderful venue in a medieval building in the historic center of Brasov (Kronstadt). We are minutes away from main touristic sites, and also within easy walking access to restaurants and coffee shops. The studio is at the ground floor and it’s easily accessible, but it doesn’t have special facilities for disabilities. Being an old building, it doesn’t have great light, so we strongly advice to bring a good portable battery-operated lamp. Lunches are organized in the studio, as a light buffet.
For the field trips, transport is included.
On request we can arrange transport from the airport, for those who do not wish to come by, or rent a car.
There are plenty of options for good accommodation close by, we can send out our suggestions.

That’s why we recommend that you take our cancellation policy into account when you decide to participate in Cembra workshops.
Withdrawal from this course will be different from our normal cancellation policy. The course involves the presence of two lecturers from outside the country, whose transport and accommodation are provided, therefore confirmation of the number of learners is especially important for them.
You will be able to withdraw from this event at least 2 weeks before the scheduled date and we will refund 50% of the course price paid in full upon registration.

Our workshops and courses focus on the study and research of natural subjects through various disciplines, such as botanical art and flower design, landscape design, cyanotype, linocut, ink and textile dye. In forms of short workshops, distance learning, summer schools, art retreats and long term courses, our tutors aim to investigate creative explorations and authentic approaches of urban and wild nature.
