Ruxandra Grigoraș is an architect, designer and founder of Sinopia brand, where she explores modern calligraphy techniques, with oriental or even graffiti influences. Ruxandra’s calligraphic experiments aim to reassess the relationship between the signifier and the signified, showing that typography does not need to be constricted by universal rules, but it can become a personal fantasy of representation.
The experimental calligraphy workshop with Ruxandra Grigoraș encourages gestural writing, using Indian Ink, nibs and other unconventional instruments, which can leave a unique imprint on the text. It is a freestyle technique, where the experiment dictates the form of the final work.
For the first part of the workshop, students will exercise their flow and rhythm and learn basic techniques in calligraphic writing. Afterwards, each student will be able to explore different letters forms or create an experimental text, starting from a given topic. We will focus on discovering new shapes and textures that can create equilibrium in a composition. The readability of the text is less important than the emotion it conveys.
For the last part, each student will create a personal work on A4 size format, using high-quality paper, which they will be able to take home, framed. Participants can come up with their own text, improvise on the spot or choose a text available in the workshop. No level of artistic training is required to participate.
