Cyanotype is an analog photography technique that has been used by artists and architects for almost two centuries now. In botanical illustration, Anna Atkins was the first person to use cyanotype (as early as 1843) for naturalistic studies of plants. She is also considered to be the first photographer in history. The particularity of cyanotype is given by the monochrome effect in shades of Prussian blue, but also by the translucent aura of the imprinted subject. The process generally follows the same steps as traditional photography development and has become an art by itself, not just a method of visual reproduction.
The tutor of this cyanotype art workshop is Adriana Chiru. She studied film and media production at Coventry University in England, and she currently works as a journalist, photographer and producer of documentaries and short films. Adriana’s portfolio describes an artist who works with many mediums and explores less conventional visual expressions, that give resonance to her artistic discourse.
This workshop is addressed to those who are passionate about visual arts, but also to those who want to give up the digital world for a day and understand the whole process of creating photograms. Although at first glance it may seem like a purely technical process, cyanotype offers many possibilities for stylization and can spectacularly interact with other media and artistic domains.
At the end of the workshop, the students get to keep their final work and a cyanotype mini-kit as a gift, for further experiments.
