Linocut is a versatile manual printing technique that can be applied to a variety of surfaces, from paper to textile. The process implies carving a ”negative” image on the linoleum board, to be later used as a stamp for the reproduction of the initial image. Although linocut is an old printing technique that emerged prior to the digital age, it is still very popular today, used by all kinds of artists. Using this technique you can create design patterns and customize various decorative objects or clothing. Each print is unique and has the beauty of spontaneous effects generated by the entirely manual process.
The linocut workshop conducted by Andra Lupu is suitable for beginners and experienced students as well. Andra Lupu is a mixed media artist and a jewelry designer, with a lot of experience in teaching creative workshops. She loves to experiment and combine new techniques and mediums in her creative projects, and linocut printing is one of her hobbies.
For the first part of this workshop, each student will sketch their own decorative concept or they will use a given pattern. Then, they will transfer the drawing onto the linoleum board, which will be carved accordingly, using specific tools. Finally, students will be able to handprint their design on a tote bag and keep it as a souvenir. If desired, they are free to bring their own piece of fabric to be customized at the end of the workshop.
